Location
of Pontiac Identification Numbers
If you are having trouble finding the I.D. stamping or plates click
on the thumbnail below.
The picture has X's to mark the locations
of the numbers.
X marks the large plate
that tells the year, bodystyle, paint, trim etc.
XX marks the smaller
plate underneath the larger one. These numbers are coded and they tell
the place of manufacture, engine, year, series and the actual production
number for that assembly line.
XXX is a stamping on the original
engine block which shows the same numbers as the smaller plate.

This photo is of a 47-2809 that I saw at my first car swap
meet in Pomona CA. It was sold sometime in 1988 or 89.
I have no idea who the owner is today.
