Wow, you are absolutely right about it being a Torpedo
not a Streamliner. The bars I had with the hood say Streamliner 8
and it looked like the only photo I had so I assumed (dummy me) that the
seller was correct. The title says it's a 1947, but I was able to
figure out that it may have been produced in 1947, but it is a 1948 model.
After you told me it was a Torpedo, I got out the
tape measure and sure nuf, no way near long enough. How can you tell
the difference between the 4 door Torpedo and a 4 door Streamliner besides
the overall length? (Tip: The chrome on the Torpedo
goes around each window seperatly on the 07's, while the Streamliner's
window chrome goes around both side windows. The "notchback" models like
Lynnes' were only made in the Torpedo series) -Don
Also, for some reason I never did see the main web
page until you directed me to it. I had found you originally under
Pontiac, when the Fabulous Forties page came up. I didn't realize
there was another whole page with all the info you have about the different
years and models. (I hate when that happens-
I have asked Rich to change the page and add the link but he must be busy.
His site has really grown.)-Don
Finally got the hood up so I can see the ID plate.
It's missing the springs so it takes Jerry (my boyfriend) to get the 1000
pound hood up. The plate says Style #10-2519D Car number 8K1313 Trim
71 then some paint numbers I'm not sure of N600 and A00?? Definitely a
Torpedo! The pink slip on the car has numbers C499808035E and vehicle
ID number K8PA3720. It has a non distinctive liscense number California3MCZ672.
I'll attach the pictures of the car when it was still in one piece.
I noticed one of the cars in the photos was from
a Wavecrest meet. Are you going this year? (Sept. 19th)
I don't live far so it is one I usually don't miss. One of the gals
I work with is big on organizing it so we talk old cars a lot. I
wish mine was together enough to run down there, but I figure about March
it will together again. Thankfully, all the chrome/stainless steel
and
fenders are together and in pretty good shape. As I strip the
paint I see a few little dings that have had filler, but overall it's in
better cosmetic shape than I am. I don't have the patience to do
a restore. Even finding the few things I need (a spring for the door
lock) are frustrating, so I admire your (and your wifes) patience. Thanks
for the pointers on what to look for for the differences. Since I
didn't start out looking for a Pontiac (had always like Plymouth's) I'm
new to the subtle differences between the models. Thanks again
for the help!
The fender gravel guards came with the car--all 3
of them. They are metal, but I could't see putting them on since
we were stripping the car anyway. Somewhere in the last 4 years someone
painted the car--badly. Right over the welting and the rust.
I've taken off the fenders on the front doors and the color under it is
black. The roof has partially been stripped down as well and the
original color was black. It must have been quite a beauty in it's
time. I have the owners name that owned it before the guy I bought
it from (Ted Keith) but I haven't gotten in contact with him. He
is apparantly the one I need to talk to to find out more of the history
as he owned it and rented it out for movies. If I ever get around
to calling him, I'll forward the interesting parts.
Just wondering if you saw the 48 Pontiac in this months
Street Rod Magazine. Nice convertible. (Anybody
else see this? Let's sign him or her up!) We went to Wavecrest...2
Pontiacs. A 39 I think and a 50. Both are works in progress.
Also went to Costa Mesa. One bright yellow 49 or 50. For sale.
Did you go to that meet? Figured you might have, since it was a 3
day-er and closer to you. Sure a lot of nice cars out there.
We also went to Route 66 the same weekend as Wavecrest. I don't think
I saw one Pontiac there. I'm starting to wonder how many of these
old cars are still alive. Any idea? I sent in my $$$ for the
POCI a few weeks ago, hope to get something from them soon, so we
can get out and see more of the oldies.
The dismantaling process is coming along. I've got 3 doors, 3 fenders and half a trunk lid stripped. New tires in the attic. Glass is out to get recut and rubber has been ordered. I talked to one guy in LA about rechroming. I figure about $1200 just for the big pieces. Sound about right? The strip down the trunk is just in need of a polishing. I know once I do the big pieces, then the door handles will need it, guess I'd just better figure them in also.
